"Keeping the Northern Palm Beaches Cool for over 15 years."

Finally, it is vacation time and you and the family are all set and ready to leave your Florida home and make your way to your favorite holiday destination!

If your home has an HVAC system, then you are probably going to wonder if you should keep it switched off or turned on during the time you are away.

In short, it is best practice to leave your air-conditioning system on when you go on vacation, but there are some things to take into consideration.

Family Vacation

In this blog, we will talk about whether to keep your HVAC system on while you are on vacation, what you should consider before deciding to keep the system running or not, and how else you can save money and energy costs while you are on vacation.

The Duration of Your Vacation

During normal circumstances when you are between your workplace and your home daily then it is generally recommended that you adjust the temperature settings on your thermostat to save on energy.

Going on vacation, however, is slightly different and needs to be controlled differently.

Vacationing for A Week or Two

If your vacation is only going to be for a few days, then it is recommended that you set your air conditioner halfway between the normal temperature that you normally use and 80 degrees.

A Longer Vacation

A longer vacation may require a different action. If this is the case, then you should turn the AC system off before you leave your home. This will ultimately save you both money and energy.

What To Do Before You Leave for Vacation

Here are a few things that can be done to make sure that you are keeping your home as energy efficient as possible when you leave for vacation

1.     Check Air Filters

Always check your air filters for dirt and debris before you go on vacation. Change the filter if it is needed. This way your aircon will run optimally when you are away.

2.     Unplug Appliances and Other Electronics

Did you know that even when electronic and other appliances are plugged in and not being used, they can still cause your air-conditioner to work harder?

Even when these appliances are not being used, they are still able to make heat and cause your HVAC unit to work harder than it should.

3.     Shut It Down!

Make sure to shield the inside of your home from the sun and other elements by closing all windows, curtains, drapes, blinds, and doors before your departure. This will help the air-conditioning to run efficiently and prevent unnecessary energy costs.

4.     Invest in a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat is an answer to all your problems, and if you do not have one then it is a great idea to invest in one.

Programmable thermostats can be controlled by your cell phone when you are not home and allow you to adjust settings, programs, and schedules as to how you want your HVAC unit to run when you are not there.

This way, when you arrive home you can walk into a cool environment and be more comfortable while you unpack.
